Tips for Getting Started
Admissions to University of Arizona Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics graduate programs are handled through the UA Graduate College. Information provided here is summarized. Submission Reminders
Remember to include the following with your application as a decision cannot be entered until all requirements are met and all materials received:
- Official transcript, ensuring if you are from India that it includes official sum of total marks and marks obtained for each semester
- Minimum GPA requirements for admission:
- ME and certificates – 3.0
- MS – 3.0 on the last 60 units of undergraduate coursework
- PhD – 3.5 during MS study
- GRE general test scores – minimum 151 verbal and 155 quantitative – for students seeking a graduate certificate in Advanced Transportation Engineering, ME, MS or PhD
- For international students who do not hold degrees from English-speaking universities, TOEFL or IELTS scores dated no more than two years before the term of application
- TOEFL Score Reporting and Scoring Change Effective January 21, 2026
The Graduate College website has been updated to reflect changes to the TOEFL scoring and score reporting. The information below summarizes how TOEFL scores will be evaluated under the new structure.- For approximately two years following January 21, 2026, TOEFL score reports will display multiple values, including the CEFR level, the 1-6 section scores, and a comparable score on the legacy scale.
- For tests taken prior to January 21, 2026: Minimum score of 79 iBT or Home Edition iBT.
- For tests taken on or after January 21, 2026: Minimum overall score of 4.0 on the TOEFL 1-6 scale.
- Please be mindful of the updated English Speaking Proficiency requirements for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GATs).
- For approximately two years following January 21, 2026, TOEFL score reports will display multiple values, including the CEFR level, the 1-6 section scores, and a comparable score on the legacy scale.
- TOEFL IBT Speaking Section:
- For tests taken prior to January 21, 2026: minimum speaking score of 24
- For tests taken on or after January 21, 2026: minimum speaking score of 5 on the TOEFL 1-6 scale

- IELTS composite score of at least 7 with no subject area falling below 6
