Alyssa Ryan, assistant professor of CAEM, spoke with Arizona Public Media about conducting her comprehensive study examining disparities in traffic safety.

"We have a lot of transportation data we can pull from to start to look into how different people experience the transportation system, and in particular, the level of safety they experience," Ryan said.

From her previous research, Ryan notes women are more likely to suffer primary injuries to the chest, abdomen, and legs than men in similar car accidents.

“When we actually look into the specific data of when women and men get into separate crashes, we know women walk away with more injuries," Ryan said. "And they also walk away with different types of injuries than men do."

The current study further examines safety aspects for those who choose to ride bikes, take buses, or walk to their destinations, and looks at how traffic incidents vary in severity and response in different neighborhoods and rural areas.
