CAEM students and alumni won multiple awards at the Southern Arizona branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Young Member Forum.

Junior Emma Lenarz, community liaison officer for the University of Arizona chapter of ASCE, and senior Joel Hernandez, the club’s secretary, received the ASCE Young Member Forum scholarship. Department alumnus Ben Mitchell, who graduated in 2019 and now works for Psomas, presented them with the award. Alumna Lindsey Willman, who graduated in 2017 and now works as a transportation analyst for Kittelson and Associates also presented the Southern Arizona Intelligent Transportation Engineering Hank Warner Memorial Scholarship to senior Reman Almusawi.

In addition, Jose Aguilar, who earned his bachelor’s degree in CAEM in 2014 and now works as a professional engineer at WSP Inc., was recognized as Young Engineer of the Year.

“Jose Aguilar is an excellent role model for our students of what a civil engineer can contribute professionally and to the community,” said Dean Papajohn, CAEM associate professor of practice. “The support from ASCE is a big encouragement to our students as they work toward their engineering degrees.”

Alumna Kristina Swallow, who earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Arizona in 1994 and now serves as director of the Nevada Department of Transportation, was the keynote speaker for Engineer's Week at the awards dinner.
