DerHaag Awarded 2017-2018 Simpson Strong-Tie Scholarship
Congratulations to Kyle DerHaag on receiving the $2,000 Simpson Strong-Tie Scholarship. Kyle is a senior in civil engineering with an emphasis in construction.
Simpson Strong-Tie Co. Inc. has established a scholarship program to assist construction management, architecture and structural engineering students to support education, and encourage the design and building of safer structures in our communities.
DerHaag joined 30 of the 68 scholarship recipients in Pleasanton, California, to visit the Simpson Strong-Ties factory and training center to learn more about safe construction methods. "It was interesting to see the manufacturing of connectors and wedge anchors, some of which I have used on the I-10 bridge replacement project I worked on this summer," DerHaag said.
Granite Construction Internship
This summer, DerHaag was an intern with Granite Construction Inc. in Tucson, where he worked on bridge and roadway construction projects, got involved in survey layouts, and coordinated work activities with ADOT and subcontractors.
DerHaag also used the P6 scheduling skills he learned in CE482: Construction Planning, Scheduling, and Control to report and explain the weekly schedules to ADOT and Granite’s management team.
“This summer I’ve learned a lot about bridge construction, along with subcontractor coordination and the financial aspects of a project from the perspective of the general contractor,” he said.
