Amanda Wittenborn Selected for Kiewit's Women's Construction Leadership Seminar
On Jan. 23-24, 2018, at Kiewit's training center in Denver, Colorado, CEEM undergraduate Amanda Wittenborn joined collegiate women from around the country to learn more about leadership and the construction industry at the Women's Construction Leadership Seminar.
A Well-Organized Event Led by Remarkable Women
Wittenborn said she felt extremely honored to participate in Kiewit's Women's Construction Leadership Seminar. "After a summer internship in the construction industry, I already had questions about opportunities and setbacks I may have to face as a woman in a male-dominated business."
She described the seminar as "a classy and well-organized event led by remarkable women," where no question was off limits, and said the seminar leaders wanted to inspire, liberate and encourage other women beginning their careers.
Wittenborn said attendees were busy almost every moment of the two-day event, listening to women speakers give suggestions about how to handle difficult situations; brainstorming how to encourage other young women to engage in STEM programs; and learning firsthand industry trade skills such as layout, safety, welding, pipe fitting and electrical systems.
"Most valuable to me was learning the balance between what is expected from any person in the industry versus what we as women bring to the table, no better or worse than our male counterparts," she said. "I would highly encourage all women in engineering to apply for this seminar. You will not be disappointed.'
