Students Explore Water Conservation Balance at Aqualibrium Competition

Students from St. Cyril of Alexandria Middle School participated in the Aqualibrium Arizona water network design challenge April 19-20 at the UA.

Under the direction of civil engineering graduate student Chris Horstman, 80 students from the school experienced this hands-on engineering activity, which explored where the students’ water comes from, what civil engineers do, and the importance of conserving this valuable resource in an arid climate.

Though international collaboration with the South African Institute for Civil Engineering, the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics offers the competition as part of a learning module designed for Arizona high school students. These events serve to foster a more community-minded youth population and are crucial to the department’s commitment to educational outreach in the local community.

An additional 84 students from across the country also participated in the Aqualibrium water challenge this summer as part of the UA Engineering Summer Engineering Academy.
