CAEM Grad Student Wins Audience Choice Award at Project Precast

CAEM graduate student Joseph Moya and his team won the Audience Choice Award for their work at the PCI Foundation's second annual Project Precast Design Competition in 2020. At the competition in Fort Worth, Texas, five student teams from around the nation were tasked with designing a Texas high school football stadium for the modern era, using precast concrete. The teams had only 30 hours to write a one-page summary of their design, create a presentation, and pitch their design to an audience of more than 100.

“The students had no idea what their project was, nor had they ever met the industry mentors or other members of their teams before they arrived in Texas,” said Marty McIntyre, Chicago-based executive director of the PCI Foundation and host of the competition.

Though Moya and his team did not secure the $3,000 first-place prize, their school design won the Audience Choice Award. Moya worked with Jeffery Cheung from the University of Southern California and Mohamed Hassan from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The PCI Foundation is the educational entity that supports the Precast/Prestressed Concrete industry. The mission of the PCI Foundation is to foster educational and research initiatives focused on innovative approaches to the integrated and sustainable use of precast concrete design, fabrication and construction.
